I see a lot of people are havng problems with avatars. Let me explain a little. Idea

Avatars are enabled on the server so you can either upload your own, or link to another website if you have the avatar there and know the full HTTP link.

Avatars are set at a maximum size of 64x64 pixels, so if you have an avatar larger than this, you will need to resize it in a package like Paint Shop Pro.

Avatars also hold a size restriction of 6k. This is to make sure that long threads don't start crawling with pictures, as some avatars in other forums can be 30 to 40k, and this is just far too large, and will slow down forums.

If you do have any avatar issues, post them here and we'll try to help.

You haven't, you've got the blank avatar, your browser maybe caching it though and if the image no longer exists then it may be temporarily showing a red x. Try emptying your browser cache/temporary internet files, or CTRL+REFRESH a page where you've posted (like this one) and it should disappear hopefully.

It's not on our end fletch, it's cached at your end, or your ISP's end if you are going through a proxy server. I don't see a red X next to your forum name.

Hi Dave

I'm looking at this thread now and the Red X appears below Fletch's name on my screen. But in saying that it's not the first time I've seen this type of thing before. It seems to happen in the main on e-mails or websites where there should be a photo showing.

I have never been able to find out why it happens or how to clear it Question

Regards

alfieB Thumbs Up

i have seen this red cross on several other user names and as i said before i had put a picture from the site list using my laptop and it was there for a week or so, then i decided to remove it and the red cross has been there ever since i have two computers connected to broadband through an adsl firewall wireless router the picture was set up only on one computer but the red cross comes up on both if that makes any sense and as alfieB has pointed out he can see it too could it be something to do with the site page programming code?

Well, all I can say is it's not server side because I've checked, and there's nothing untoward there. I've just tried browsing this page with 9 different web browsers, 4 have never even touched this site before and I'm not seeing a red cross on any of them, so I can only presume that it's cached locally by your web browser or by your ISP's if they're using a web cache or proxy server or if you're running the computer on a company connection then you may have an internal web cache or proxy that has cached the image erroneously from the site. This could have been cached because you have visited the site and seen the red cross at some stage, like earlier today and it's cached it.

If CTRL+REFRESH in IE isn't working, or in any other browser and you're still seeing the red cross then you're behind some sort of web cache or proxy, the image will probably disappear over time.
