Nice one, I liked it very much. Now, which one am I? Rolling Eyes

BTW, I for one am not prepared to submit to a camara database that is no longer free. I use POIEdit which is set to download everytime I connect to my PC. The idea of a month free for a submission is lunatic so I am off to a free database which I will be supplying with any new sights that I find.

With reference to a post somewhere above in page three about getting a laser/radar detector, ill let you decide after telling you this. It takes a third of a second for a laser to lock on and get a speed reading of your vehicle and usually by the time the detector has bleeped the copper has all the evidence he needs. There are times you could pick up scatter from cars being targeted ahead, but really all these laser detectors tell you is that you have a ticket coming in the post.

It was me that posted the bit about laser/radar detectors, and I must admit I agree with you.

I borrowed one for a while (a Snooper S4 neo) and was not impressed. The bit about scatter from other cars ahead is probably wishful thinking on the part of the makers, rather than reliable real life experience.

as the database is/will be subscription based I for two see is no point in sending submissions... if it was still free I would have gladly contiributed my knowledge of the area I live for free... eg. there are 4 mobile locations in a 15 mile stretch that are incorrect, (theres been no one "camping" there for years)... and thats just one location I bother to mention from many...

So, your one post on, or contribution to, the forum is to point out that you won't be contributing. Confused

Can I point out that the camera database isn't owned by anyone. Its not copyrightable or protected by trademarks as its purely data. If pocketgps want to charge for download, thats ok.
However there isn't anything to stop it being being shared elsewhere.

Actually that is wholly untrue and we have taken advice that confirms our position. Co-ordinates are not by themselves subject to copyright but the collective works that constitute our database is.

In much the same way as an individual post code is not subject to copyright whereas the collection of Post Codes that forms the Postcode database is.

Our database is a collective work and our copyright is based on the work that has been dedicated to creating it and maintaining it.

I think you are right, but if anyone converted into another format then they would own that database - correct?

Uh no. Any database that contained a substantial proportion of our data whatever form it was converted into would still be subject to our Copyright and IP ownership. Do you really think Copyright could be flouted so easily?

On a slightly different tack - each time I download the database I have to do a considerable amount of editing to the files before I can use them.

This is not a problem when tha data is free BUT if I have to pay then it should come already edited.

Is this going to happen?

I don't recall having seen anyone asking if the data presentation is satisfactory.

Why do you have to edit them? What platform are you using them on?

I am using the Lidl MyGuide 6500XL and POIObserver.

The editing I have to do is to remove all your headings (Longitude, Latitude, Name) and pad any files with less than 5 entries.

I'm not familiar with that software and its not an issue I have seen reported before. We don't have any files with less then 5 entries so no padding would be required but what data format does your system accept?

Where there is sufficient demand we will always create a specific version. However given the variety of formats that some of the less popular systems use there will not always be enough demand to justify this.
