This spring Garmin announced the introduction of a new range of GPS receivers: the Gekos. They have created two new models the Geko 101 and the Geko 201. These are small, trendy and snuggle in the palm of your hand and Mike has just completed his review not of one, but both!

Mike,

Very impressive performance, could the 201 well replace the Leadtek??? for PDA use.

To get the signal from home to Spain, where was the Geko positioned. Did you have to have a window seat?

Will it pick-up inside a car or does it have to be windscreen positioned??

Is there a facility to have an external antenna?

Thanks

On the flight from the UK to Spain I did have a window seat half way down the plane. The Geko was sitting on the drop down table in front of me about 2 feet from the window. I did loose the signal twice during the flight, but placing the Geko neer the window restored it.

The receiver certainly does pick up inside the car. I did generally have the Geko on the dash so that the cables didnt get in the way, but the receiver worked well in the storage area by the handbrake.

No external aerial facilities, but wouls obviously work with a re-rad.

Could it replace the Leadtek? Very probably. It really depends on your requirements. The really great thing about these is that they can record tracks when the PDA is not on conserving battery power and give you an instant position when the PDA is turned on.

All that is really missing is the ability to connect to a PDA using Bluetooth, but no doubt Garmin will get on to that soon then watch out for a batch of totally flexible multifunctional GPS devices.
