Hi,
This is my first time here.
I purchased the 'Typhoon MyGuide 3500 in car satellite system' from Makro's on 1st September, I have never used or owned a Pocket PC before so i didn't know what to expect.

The specs looked good so i took the risk to buy it.
'In car satellite system'
'Car kit included'
'256MB SD card & UK road maps pre-loaded'
'Built in GPS receiver'
'Full voice instruction'
'Walk mode for navication on foot'
'Live positional map'
'Microsoft mobile 2003'
'Falk navigation 2004 + Maps on 2 CDs'

£279.99 +vat.

As i said before i have never used one of these units before so i don't know if this unit performs better/same/worst than anyother unit.
Sometimes it will work as soon as i start my journey, other times it will let me drive for 5 minutes before it wakes up.

I find that if i ignore the route it planned for me it might 'sulk' for a while and refuse to talk to me or update my position on the map.
This could be due to the possitioning of it in my car.

I have no problems with it getting me from A to B, but i consider it the same as taken a bus, it seems to make up strange routes, a good example of that is ... i was traveling on a dual carrigeway and it told me to ignore the fly-over and part/rejoin the carrigeway via the roundabout underneath it.

Overall i'm very impressed with the Typhoon Falk navigation, i'm not sure if i could replace the software if i wanted as the gps is built in (uses Port 2)

I did want to import the Gatso database into it, but i never worked out how to do this.
I will wait for somebody much smarter than me to work it out.

The english web site is a bit bare atm, it has no FAQ or drivers, no doubt this will change as sales increase.

Maybe some of you can rate this against other makes you have tried.

:D
Pete.

Hi streetbum

Welcome to the forum.

Although im not familiar with your new hardware here are a few pointers

the gps receiver takes time to aquire the satalite lock. this is typicaly a few seconds up to a minute. if you start to move before you have a lock it can take considerably longer.

if you have a satelite lock it should make no diferance. This 'pause' is possibly caused by the processor trying to recalculate a new route.

The position of the unit in your car should be ok if you are getting stable satelite locks.

Hi and thx The_Pilgrim,

I didn't get very far before running into problems.
After downloading and installing CheckPOInt v2.0.2 i found the 'Detect POI's from this Overlay' was empty, i figured this was due to the fact i wasn't using tomtom software.
So i uninstalled CheckPOInt v2.0.2 and installed the later version Download CheckPOInt v3.2 in hope that might work out i was using 'other' software.

When i tried to run it .. nothing happened, the icon at the bottom of the screen didn't appear like it did on the older version.
So i decided to uninstall that version and go back to v2.0.2

But now that version doesn't work, i do get the icon back at the bottom of the screen (prefs etc) but nothing happens when i click on it.
Do you think some dll files got left behind after removing the 2.3 version and now i'm getting a conflict?

Any help would be appreciated.

Pete.

CheckPOInt is for TomTom only and so will not work with other software.

Out of interest what software do you have? It may be possible to import our database but this depends on whether your software supports custom POIs and offers a facility to convert from a .csv file.

Hi Darren,
The software on the Typhoon is Falk Navigation.
contents

\Storage Card\TB-NAVI
gbr.bin (57.3mb)
gbr.bin.c (4.09kb)
gbr.bin.lex (256kb)
gbr.bin.pcl (3.54kb)
gbr.ini (332 bytes)
gbr.ov1 (228kb)
gbr.ov1.c (68 bytes)
gbr.ov2 (4.95mb)
gbr.ov2.c (608 bytes)
gbr.tns (60.1mb)
preview.ini (278 bytes)

the rest of the files are located in \Program Files\Navigator 2004
there is a bmp dir, but the contents aren't as you would expect.
all the files in this dir are .opm
e.g
ESSO.opm (petrol stations overlays)

then there is a DATA dir, this contains a single text file called data.txt, inside that file it simply say's 'do not delete'

then there is a Waves.e.km dir, for some reason i only have the option of installing a metric system, this dir contains all the spoken messages (wav files)

back in the root of \Program Files\Navigator 2004
are the following files.

0.cmp (1.29mb)
1.cmp (26.9kb)
2.cmp (8.67kb)
addr.ini (4.19kb)
FalkNavigator.exe (1.46mb)
FalkNavigator.ini (1.80kb)
MGNavi_UK.dll (806kb)

I can zip these files up and send them to you if that would be any help.

many thx.
Pete.

Opps, forgot to add ...
i don't recall seeing a option to customize POIs or a facility to convert from a .csv file, i only remember seeing the option to make my own maps.

Sorry i can't give any more info than that, i'm very new to all this.

there is a piece of software called Travel-i which is a camera and speed warning program. The Lite version is free and it includes the pocket_gps_uk database pre-installed. and the best thing is... it works! (for me at least)
It is a stand-alone application so runs seperate to your navigation program.

check it out here

I have solved the proplem.

Delete the original Falk navigator software and replace it with TomTom.
Now i'm REALLY happy, TomTom thrashes the original software, i have all the gatso's loaded as well now.

Hi,

I have had the same problems as you, the problem lies in the FALK software. I have replaced my FALK software with TomTom Navigator 3 with Checkpoint speed camera detection and it works straight away the display in NAV mode is fantastic for oriantation etc it is far more accurate, FALK refused to show my position if I strayed to far off the normal road system!, u can pick TomTom up in the UK for under £100 quid.

I hope this helps. :D

Hello people, Like street bum I have purchased the same Sat Nav system and software. I decided to purchase a Sat Nav after using my uncles pda, his is a packard bell and is fine.

My problem is the screen.

On my uncles pda the screen was fine when driving, but, on the typhoon pda ,with the vibrations in the car whilst driving, the screen seems to jump and the text blur(ish)? when you look closer for example, the text slightly merges with the vibration with what seems a dull cloud behind the type, stop the vibration and it screen/text becomes clear again, but the main problem is the what seems to be the screen jumping and focasing!

Now, im not on drugs people, but as a beginner I do not know if the screen type is to blame or someting to do with the crystals in the screen, does it need time to warm up?? LCD?? resolution?? Pixels??

As you can tell from the above example i don't no to much what im talking about, but would really appreciate any help or advise on the matter.

Thanks for your time

Chunk

because the forums are specific and im not to sure which it would come under? so i though the best way was to put the same question in a few, as certain people that might know will not even view other rooms.

Can you help and does that answer your question?
