Over 14,500 speeding drivers have been caught by a set of speed cameras on the A13 in Essex. The cameras run between the Grays and Wennington junctions and were installed in April 2015.

A Freedom of Information request reveals that there have been 14,537 motorists caught on the stretch by the average speed cameras.

Highways England commented: "There's been a 50mph speed limit on the A13 though its junction with the M25 since January 2015. It is clearly signed and many thousands of drivers use it every day without being caught out."

A significant amount of people are either ignorant of how these cameras work (including foreign drivers), lose concentration or blatantly ignore the speed limit. It's likely that many believe that the cameras are not actually switched on.

For those that don't know, simply put, pairs of cameras monitor a stretch of road. The first of the pair spot your number plate and start a timer. The second camera spots your number plate again when you complete that stretch and makes a calculation. It measures your average speed over the stretch and then compares it to the allowed speed.

130 weeks since installation. Say 100 a week. Bearing in mind the volume of traffic on that route, that’s a very small haul. It would be interesting to hear how many of them were foreigners - I suspect quite a high majority.

Which presumably means the fines won't get paid.

If I remember correctly, it depends which country they're from and what arrangements we have with them.

I thought that they had changed the rules recently, but not sure how. Probably means that EU countries can chase us, but we can't chase them. Rolling Eyes

They should be fined at the point of exit. No fee then the truck gets impounded.

I should be transport minister Laughing
