A man has been jailed for six weeks for speeding whilst he was disqualified from driving.

Kevin Gill, 48 from Colchester, Essex was caught twice in two months exceeding the limit by the same speed camera in Mersea Road Colchester.

Gill pleaded guilty at Colchester Magistrates Court to speeding while disqualified and driving without insurance. He was given three weeks in prison for each offence and was banned from driving for 18 months.

He is reported to have ten previous convictions for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Police Officer Roy Keyes commented: "This case is proof that we will act on any driver who does not wish to comply, and in this instance, a prison sentence was given for a prolific offender who thought he could get away with driving while also disqualified."

Err, so we should install lots of speed cameras in order to catch banned drivers?

Will they also catch drink and drunk drivers? Maybe they could also be adapted to catch burglars. Rolling Eyes

Ah, my sarcastic point is that speed cameras don’t catch anybody EXCEPT speeders. The camera doesn’t know from beans whether a passing object is a drunken or banned driver or a burglar or an ill treated rabbit. So it doesn’t send anybody to jail, it just flags a speeding driver. If the responsible people (police) look up his record, they will then discover he’s banned, uninsured etc. Police will report or charge him accordingly. BUT in this case, I do wish it had been a police patrol which caught him, not his own actions betraying him.

In other words - if the camera had not been there, he would not have been caught. Also if he had not been speeding he would not have been caught.

This case is not a reason to be glad for speed cameras, it’s a reason to bemoan the absence of police patrols.

Unsure about patrol numbers, but the following stats are interesting is they can be believed:

FOI release 30077.

Total number of police officers in England and Wales.

As at Number of police officers
31 March 1959 71,692
31 March 1970 91,307
31 March 1997 125,051
31 March 2003 132,509
31 March 2012 134,100
Figures for 1997, 2003 and 2012 are provided on a full-time equivalent basis and have been rounded to the nearest whole number. Figures for 2003 and 2012 include police officers on career breaks and maternity/paternity leave whilst the figure for 1997 excludes these officers.
Figures for 1959 and 1970 were obtained from Home Office monthly returns of strength and vacancies. These monthly returns do not state whether the figures are on a full-time equivalent basis or whether they include officers on career breaks or maternity/paternity leave.

Apparently there are nearly 200,000 now.

I wonder what the UK population was for the same years so a ratio can be created.

At a guess, the population has increased by between 10 and 20% (50m to 60m - and I am NOT to be relied upon).

But my surprise is down to the regular statements that police numbers have been cut heavily, that savings have been and are continuing to be made and it all affects their ability to go out doing police stuff like catching criminals and keeping us all safe in our beds. Would it be only in the last five years that cuts/savings have happened? I wonder if those 'police officers' are all actual policemen and not back office civilians and PCSOs.

A glance at the census figures shows roughly :-

1961 53 million
2011 63 million

I can't believe I was that close!

So here goes my sums :-

1961 population 53 million, divided by 72K police = 1 officer per 736 heads.

2011 population 63 million, divided by 200K police = 1 officer per 315 heads.

Somebody please tell me I'm wrong.

They probably need the extra manpower because when anything happens like a motorway shunt they turn up mob handed amd stay there all day.
