My unit has CN Europe NTU 2018.10 Foursquare and CN Europe NTU 2018.10 Western Europe maps. Both boxes are ticked, so what is the crack with Foursquare? Is that just their POI's?

Anyhoo, looking at the forum the last map update was in March. I thought there were supposed to be 3 or 4 updates per year, so it would seem they are overdue. I know it doesn't seem to follow any set pattern for updates, but there must be one due imminently mustn't there?

Mark

Yes, I would think so ...

Last year (calendar year 2016, not map year) the release dates were, as far as I am aware, 7th January, 7th April, and 8th September. This calendar year's release dates have been 4th January and 29th March. If the pattern is repeated anticipate a new map in about 4 weeks.

Unfortunately trying to predict based on previous years isn't that reliable, but I'd certainly expect one within 4 weeks Very Happy

... and yes, the Foursquare file contains the myriads of POIs that Garmin have brought in on various devices.

Actually it's more than that. There are the POIs embedded in the map data and then Foursquare on some devices only. Detail is here

It would be wonderful if the next update also upgraded the guidance information at roundabouts to include road numbers, rather than the useless road names that we currently get, but although I have requested this from Garmin, I'm not that hopeful.

Curious one this, Garmin have always tended to use road names rather than road numbers, there must be a reason for it?

There seems not to be despite feedback to the contrary, and it's a pain in the ass when following a major road, as you know the number, but unless you are local (and don't need the satnave anyway) you likely don't know the road name. Some satnavs give you the choice (iGO)

As mentioned, road names are silly if you're not local.

To be fair, the BBC are just as bad; often the local news (TV and or radio) will announce something like 'the A617 between Mansfield and Newark is blocked due to an incident at Drovers Lane.'

So somewhere along the 20 mile route!

Good job we've got Google.

Not silly Krem, damn stupid.
But a quick glance at the map tends to sort things out.

Fortunately my built in Alpine unit is a bit more clever.

What it does is produce a graphic showing a pseudo clock face and is fairly accurate on showing where your roundabout exit is.

If you know that your exit is at say the 2 oclock position then you can compare that to the road sign. Then my built in job announces "next exit' when appropriate.

The trouble is, some of these major junctions are not marked up very clearly and you have to decipher the half-worn lane markings on the island while trying to relate to the scanty information from the sat nav, while also watching what the other traffic racing around the roundabout is doing and also keep an eye out for any traffic lights, so it can be quite a challenge, even on a dry day, let alone on a wet night in winter.

There is quite an interesting roundabout not far from where I live: On approach, the sat nav always tell you to turn left, even if you are going to be turning right (it's the A4440 outside Worcester, travelling west to east and approaching the junction with the A38). The little symbol on the top left doesn't even show the junction as being a roundabout, even though it's been there for decades. I have reported this to Garmin as it's clearly an error, so it will be interesting to see if they have corrected it when the new map comes out.
