84 percent of the fixed speed cameras in West Sussex are not being used to catch speeding divers.
Figures from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) show that just five of the thirty one fixed speed camera housings in the area were found to be active.
The SSRP said that the number of active units fluctuate, and some are rotated between housings.
A spokesman for Worthing Community Speedwatch said of the cameras: "I think for the majority of motorists they are a deterrent, but there will always be those who know the routine and therefore ignore them."

I wonder if these are old Gatso's or Monitrons ?
Round my West London area the vast majority of old Gatso's have now been upgraded and my guess is that they are all active. _________________ Satnav:

It has always been the case that there were more housings than cameras. A nice yellow box has almost the same effect as a nice yellow box with a camera inside. If I remember correctly, when I bought the first camera installations for County of Avon, they had eight boxes and only two cameras. You only need to activate them from time to time and flash a few cars to get everybody in the know that there's a camera there, so they still slow down after you've moved the camera to another box. _________________ Dennis

And don't the older Gatsos flash even when there is no camera? You get one flash if it's empty, two if it has a camera. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
