A court has heard that a man who leaned over to pick up his fallen sat nav smashed into another car.
The device became unattached from his windscreen and fell into the passenger foot-well where his girlfriend was sitting.
21 year old Conor Sansom from Clacton was driving on the A133 in Essex when the incident occurred, resulting in the tragic death of Paul Stevens, 49, the driver of the other car.
Paul's passenger, Brian Stevens, the deceased's father suffered serious injuries. Paul's daughters were also in the car, one of whom was 23-weeks pregnant.
Sansom admitted causing the death of Mr Stevens by careless driving, but denied charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The prosecutor said of Sansom's actions: "Instead of leaving the sat nav there or asking his girlfriend to pick it up for him, something which he conceded in the interview that he ought to have done, he leaned over, down into the foot well to try to pick it up, while still driving along the road. While trying to locate it, his head was below the level of the dashboard and he was unable to see where he was going. He was effectively driving blind."
Sansom reportedly told the police: "Sat nav fell off windscreen and I literally leaned over to pick it up."

I've had satnavs fall off, but duck down to retrieve them whilst continuing to drive? That's not stupid, it's mentally incompetent. _________________ Dennis

I agree, totally reprehensible. The thought that this could have seriously injured or even killed other passengers including a pregnant woman is despicable and unforgivable.
The TomTom device I have now has a magnetic mount which is attached to the dashboard and connects it electrically and magnetically to the mount, so overcoming the problem of a device ever falling off a windscreen and, gives me some satisfaction that it requires a little force to un-attach it at the end of a journey. _________________ TT Start 60-OS:1344689 (12/9/13)
