North Yorkshire Police have taken delivery of two new speed camera vans.
The vehicles will have camera access covering the front, rear and sides and are also fitted with automatic number place recognition (ANPR) technology.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police commented: "As well as catching people who blatantly flout motoring laws such driving at excess speed, the equipment is also able to identify drivers using hand-held mobile phones and other common offences like failing to wear seatbelts."
He asked the public to report suspicious vehicles by phoning 101, adding: "If you're an active criminal it must be a horrible feeling having your every move watched over. Police always need fresh information and intelligence to keep on top of criminal activity. For example, criminals often change their vehicles or registration plates. That is why we need to know about it to keep our intelligence systems up-to-date. Put simply, we can't operate effectively without the assistance of our communities."

Clever equipment to spot people on the phone. I expect it's the operator that does that and takes a snap of them doing it along with their number plate. |

No - the equipment is magic. It spots people on the phone and takes a snap of them doing it along with their number plate. _________________ Dennis

The problem is you would spot that van a mile off and temporarily down the phone. They need a site we can upload dashcam footage or mobile phone snaps.
If drivers knew they were being watched by others they may stop. _________________ Satnav:
