The number of speeding drivers on the Orwell Bridge have been halved in one month. Just 297 drivers were caught by average speed cameras in January – down from 629 in December.

The bridge carries traffic over the River Orwell just south of Ipswich in Suffolk.

When the cameras were first activated in July, 1,699 motorists were ticketed - they are clearly having the desired effect.

Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore commented: "These latest figures are very pleasing although there were still nearly 300 drivers who ignored the speed limit so there is still work to do.

He added: "I think that we have seen fewer accidents causing disruption for the town – but that is just a feeling at this stage, we will have to wait for the report at the end of the year."

That's like that TV ad for something or other with the two Judges "Guilty... Gut feeling though"
It should have been bloody obvious if it had reduced accidents.

One of the grips I have is that camera campaigners etc use the reduction of accidents to justify the installation of cameras, but then measure their success by how many people they catch exceeding the speed limit.

TBH the cameras are pointless really as they just for going over the bridge. they should be variable so change with traffic and weather
