I have tried to set a route from Northwich, Cheshire to Sutton Bonington, Leics Initially this was via M6 then A50 taking about 1hr40mins. Then I wanted to miss out the M6 as it is invariabley slow and selected avoid motorways and it then sent me via Leek Ashbourne and Derby to get there taking 2hr 20mins. I want to go via Stoke and then down A50. Try as I might I cannot get it to do this route. I have tried selecting edit route to force it on to A50 but then it does use part of it but then shoots off back to the original route despite several edits. Both Tomtom and Google accept the A50 route if avoid motorways is selected and it takes about 1hr 45mins. Why won't my Drivsmart 60 accept this route? What am I doing wrong?

Rather than set avoid motorways look to see if you have the ability to avoid specific roads, then set it to avoid the M6.

I have found the Garmin to be a pain when trying to avoid parts of a route. With my old TT, I used to be able to avoid a road. With the Garmin I can only avoid a part of the road. So the M6 for example, you have to avoid the slip road, then it re- routes and tries to bring you on at the next. Then you have to avoid the M6 East/ West/ whatever other part of the road it shows) and it re- routes, iunvariably trying to bring you back on again. In the end I just ignore it and turn on Google Maps for the diversion, then when I am where I want to be, follow the Garmin again. Very frustrating sometimes.....

Really? Yours must work differently to mine. I can set it to avoid complete areas or as much of a road as necessary.

I assume I am doing it right? Small video in the link, you will see that if I try to avoid by road, I get many options for the same stretch of road and not just one avoid all.

Ah now I understand. You're setting a detour rather than an avoidance.

You can avoid a whole stretch of road in Settings, Navigation, Custom Avoidances.

But doesn't that avoid it permanently?

In my case, when I work up North, I like to travel up the M6. I don't like to travel down the M6 though and prefer M62/ A1 or A50/ M1 due to regular traffic issues at Birmingham, but Garmin always wants me to use M6. If I set the custom avoid, I wouldn't use the M6 at all to my mind.

My built in Nav rarely plots the exact route I use on known journeys. I let it do it's thing then when I 'go my own way' it soon recalculates and updates the traffic accordingly.

Having seen quite a few reports about Garmin routing it may be worth doing the same ?

On divided roads you can set the avoid one way, indeed you need to do it twice if you wanted to avoid it in both directions.

I do too, but if i'm in an area I don't know, I would prefer to be routed the easiest way for me, rather than have to go back to the place I know where I am and go from there (does that make sense?) What I have taken to doing now is to add a waypoint in Peterborough to get me going the way I want. I used to just leave no route planned and only use the satnav when I got to an area I didn't know, but the traffic didn't work then....

Waypoints are a good way of forcing a better route. I used to have to plonk Woodstock as a waypoint to stop it taking me on a 20+ mile extra journey round the motorways to Malvern from Heathrow.

Yes it may be slightly quicker but more expensive and boring.

Don't forget that you may have live re-routing via digital traffic info active. This can sometimes offer unusual routes - requiring you to put a lot of faith in your device!

Mine kicked in the other day telling me to go north on the M53 when I knew I wanted to go south. Guess what? The SatNav was correct - the southbound motorway was closed.
