advice for a disgruntled tomtom user please

Don't really know. I only had a 500mb allowance and travelling around 1500 miles per week, I really couldn't take the risk of going over my allowance. I also read on here it is worse than the TA cable.

In my area the Smarklink traffic is unusable (West London).

It works but when I last checked the data was supplied by viaMichelin. They were quick at adding roadworks, usually just overnight ones, but very slow, up to 9 to 12 months to remove them.

The end result, on my device, was that the roadworks were overwhelming the daily red and yellow traffic reports to the point that they were rarely showing.
My guess is that some buffer was being filled by all the roadworks data.

I can't remember exactly but I think the phone data hit was quite small. I was doing just over 200 miles a week which was about 8 to 10 hours (M25) but I can't remember the exact figure.

Get a data measuring app on your phone and try it for short time and see how much it uses.

For me (South Wales) the Smartlink app is a god-send as the datacable has many areas where it is too slow to initially connect or simply won't connect (poor signal)

I find the data and accuracy of the app good but not great (sometimes slow removing data) but it's got a lot better over the past year to the point it is about the best of the three - Garmin HD Lead, TomTom Live and the Smartlink app

Data usage for both TT connected units and Garmin via the App is minimal - you should hardly notice it

The Traffic Data system via the power cable is technically good. However, the quality of the info received is variable in terms of location accuracy and timing. Mostly it's OK.

In one case I had an extended argument with INRIX as they had a long term road closure in the wrong place causing the Garmin to go berserk with diversions when there was no need. The issue was eventually resolved when I sent them the correct info using the road closure report from the local authority.

I never blindly follow the SatNav's instructions because of a) the above and b) the tendency for the Garmin to use very minor roads which are incorrectly classified IMO.

The Garmin needs routing options such as "Easy" or "Caravan" to avoid such minor roads.

I wouldn't disagree at all, but having said that they regularly get me out of some scrapes with incidents so their downsides are outweighed by their upsides - just learn how to read their information, and be aware of your surroundings to make an informed decision yourself

if on android you can see how much mobile data an app is using, and i'm sure you can also see this on ios as well

as with maps/traffic/cameras/features both products have their issues, so you need to decide on what is more important for you to use.

I'm now using TomTom on Android as it was cheaper to pay for 3 year licence than it was to buy the camera updates on the go 5000 (it doesn't come with live time camera subs), and using my mobile means I get to use CamerAlert for my speed cameras Smile

I have also copied my ov2 files across and these show up for searching.

My only main issue is that TT seem to remove certain features from the map to save on space (this location shows a loch that is missing from tomtom maps, which i have reported on their discussion forums (not linked as unsure if ok to link to the thread), which shows the tomtom map vs google vs garmin).

I have also noticed a river missing in Scotland from their maps, which makes me think if these features are missing, what else is missing

I've just tested Smartlink on my 2597 and it does seem, at least at the moment, to be working.

My only snag is that the phone is auto paired to the car HFT system and can't connect to the car and the Garmin.

You should be able to connect to both - just untick the voice calls in the Smartphone App (on the GPS) and it will use it for data only - and voice through car as normal

Its how I use mine and works on Android and iOS

I can't have 2 bluetooth connections simultaneously.

When I enter the car and power up it's usually the car that grabs the connection first and leaves the Garmin out in the cold.
