Have you ever done a windows explorer backup to your computer ?

Have you ever purchased a new map for it ?

I am sure Andy_P or dhn or another expert will be along to help but here is a guide http://www.tomtomforums.com/threads/old-style-tomtom-acting-up-part-2-how-to-reinstall-fresh-software-using-home.27294/
New card in TT and plug it into your computer running Home. You will probably have to buy a new map though. If you had previously bought an update the system normally sees that and will download it.

Correct. Without a unit backup or if the map on the device had never been upgraded, you will have to purchase a new map. If that is your choice, I'd wait till Tuesday when I suspect the 960 maps will be released.

No. The maps are locked to the device they are originally downloaded onto. Unless you have the TT One and plan on using that as your SatNav, it's backup is useless to you.
As dhn says, wait until the new maps are out if you plan on buying maps.
