Hi
I have asked Garmin this question an incredible 10 times and eventually someone got back to me who seemed to know what they were doing, and that what I want is impossible.
When the unit was delivered, the memory was almost full. I know I can expand the memory, but I only want the UK loaded. At present the entire Europe maps are loaded. I want to delete the areas I don't want. If I can delete the entire Europe map, that's OK as I can then load the UK only using MapInstall with the entire Europe map loaded to my laptop.

Garmin say I cannot delete the map areas I don't want. I don't believe them.

Can a kind person please tell me how to delete the European areas I don't want, or the entire European map please?

You can load just parts of Europe however you lose many features such as junction view, 3D buildings etc as these are tied in with the whole of Europe map.

I did exactly what you want on my 2597. Memory was short so I used Garmin Express to replace Europe with UK&I and it worked perfectly OK.

It also retained voice control which I was told would not function if I changed from the factory map region.

The way to do it (and Garmin won't tell you this simply because mistakes can brick the device) is to rename the main map file (gmapprom.img) to something else, eg zzz.img

Now run Express. As there isn't enough room to reinstall that file you'll be given the option to select a smaller area, just choose UK. If there isn't enough room for that you'll be prompted to insert a sd card.

As you don't want that you'll then have to remove the gmapprom.img file (save it to your PC in case) and try filling the memory of the nuvi with other files until you do get Express offering to load a smaller area.

Also note the map files are in a hidden system folder named .system

If you don't know how to access that then ask, but it again makes it more likely you could brick your device, another reason why Garmin told you it couldn't be done Wink

One might just ask "So what?" What were the symptoms of the 'short' memory? For what do you use the memory so released?

All was going swingingly well until map 2015.10 That needed a SD card that I didn't have in stock so I was given the option the install UK&I. 2015.20 also needed a card so I gave up trying Europe. I know a good quality SD shouldn't make any difference but it's in my mind that reading from internal memory has to be that little bit quicker.

However, when map 2016.10 came out that fitted on the device with no card so it's back to stock.

2599 has never had any issues with needing a card.

My 2508 needed a card almost immediately, but I've never noticed any speed penalty in having the maps on a card ... given the hassle involved in trimming the map the small cost of an 8Gb card is money well spent IMO.

The latest maps fit OK on my 2599. What are you doing different?

If that's aimed at me my 2508 originally only had the UK map so only 4Gb of internal memory, not enough now I have the full EU map Wink

Many thanks sussamb

If I remove gmapprom.img to my pc for safe keeping, can I then use MapInstall and just install the UK? In Mapinstall you can chose the areas to upload to the GPS unit. This is after I downloaded the entire Europe map to my PC first.

cheers
Nick

You can but that only installs the map, not the other files like the one that contains the junction views. MapInstall is really there only for things like On the trail devices where all that is needed is the map.

Just a thought .... If you can get hold of MapUpdater, which Express replaced, that may also work for you but often it won't work with newer devices Sad

Many thanks. You mention other files that contain, for example, junction views, but if I remove gmapprom.img, isn't that just containing the map, or does it contain the junction views as well?

No it's just the map, but a junction view file is tied to the map, so you always need to install the junction view file, and others, specific to the map. Express does that but using MapInstall to install a map from your PC does not, so you lose junction views etc.

MapInstall is only there because initially Basecamp was focused on hand held devices, which didn't have additional content like junction view. Now Basecamp works with a myriad of devices, but isn't the best way to install maps to nuvis because of the issues outlined.
