Some years ago I was using OSM on my 2460 and collecting speed limit, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings on an Android device. The routing was either shortest or eco and took me on a lot of scenic routes.
Once the OSM maps were updated the routes often changed and my feeling was that traffic lights must be taken into account in their algorithms though not sure about pedestrian crossings. (Speed limits would not affect routing in this case as OSM does not have Garmin usable data but I'm sure they will be taken into account in Garmin's own maps).[/i] |

Well it's certainly possible that a firmware change has changed the algorithm slightly. If you want you could try reverting to a previous firmware, although it's not something I would normally recommend unless there were real issues after a firmware update.
Ask away though if you want to know how _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Many thanks and I would like to try to roll back the firmware. I have a spare (old) Garmin that I would use just in case!
The issues started about 12 months ago when I was going up to Hurst Green to the A21 and it decided to route me via a single track road (Burgh Hill) just after Etchingham station. Before that, it stayed on the A265. I did try a master reset but that didn't work. |

My gut feeling is altered map/road data rather than the routeing algorithm.
Shame they can't mimic my built in Alpine unit that gives 5 different routes to choose from. _________________ Satnav:

OK. Did you by any chance keep a backup of previous update files, they're named gupdate.gcd _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Yes and no! I have one for the 1690 going back to 2011 but nothing for the 2598. |

OK no worries, you can get them from here http://www.gawisp.com/perry/nuvi/
Not sure how far back you want to go but you need one for the 2xx8 and 2xx8 series, they have the dates they were issued.
Once you have the .gcd file you need to rename it gupdate.gcd and copy it to the .system folder and then reboot your nuvi. You'll get a message saying are you sure as the update is older than the installed software, or something like that, it's been a while since I had to do it. Select Yes.
Bear in mind you'll keep being offered updates if you connect to Basecamp, Express etc so you'll just have to say No every time. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

One problem is that I want to experiment on the 1690 but can't see any files. I sorted the list in terms of name as well as reading down it while looking for anything that says 16xx. Am I missing something apart from duff eyesight? |

Yep, 16xx is there ... but there's only one file
Note make a copy of the gcd file on your 1690 so you can restore it later. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

The update for the 1690 is the same firmware that is already already on the unit BUT when I checked the route from Burwash to Hurst Green (which I know changed on the 2598), it didn't take me up the single lane road. That was with the latest maps by the way. It is looking like a firmware issue.
I will try the 2598 over the next few days when I have a minute (or 10). |
