basically my proposed new car only has a 12v cigarette lighter socket in the ashtray area which has to be open to access the socket. i want to run a tomtom power lead hidden as much as possible.
the best power outlet for this is from a usb socket inside the centre armrest.

is this outlet ok to power the tomtom from as opposed to the more usual cigarette lighter style outlet?

many thanks.

I don't think in-car USB's have DC 5v power; just data wiring so not designed for running satnavs etc (at least not on the wifes i10) but you could try I guess

My Honda has 5v out from the usb socket. I've not heard of them NOT having a 5v output.

My XL works OK from a USB adaptor and lead - and also using the USB socket.

Only problem I have found was that one of my USB / cig lighter adaptor was the wrong power rating

Both TT and Garmin need a 5v connection.

The only snag with using a fag lighter USB adapter is that some units can go into computer mode instead of navigation mode.

If I was rich enough to afford to soon to be acquired bmw I'd be snooty enough to expect the seller to know. Twisted Evil

And if it won't. Then what? Very Happy I think the best plan is to wait and see. If it doesn't then sort out an alternative. In the mean time, why worry about it?
