About to buy a new satnav and am sure it's going to be a 2598 or 3598. I favour the 3598.
one application I would like is to be able to plan routes on the PC. (ideally google maps, but I guess I'll be using Basecamp?) and load those into the satnav for use on the ground.
A typical example I am talking about is planning an overseas multi week road trip and setting routes that I want to take.
There may not be a shortest or quickest route the satnav will choose to get from current location to next destination but passing a desired landmark on route.
I'm sure I could do it with a via point added, and it's probably easier to do on this than my previous satnav, but easier still would be to call up the next stage of my planned route.
Also worth noting each leg of the trip (each route) might be 50-300 miles long, and there could be 50 legs.
Can this be done at all?
With google maps?
With basecamp? |

I do all my planning on Basecamp. The advantage of doing that is you can plan on the map used by your satnav which eliminates any errors due to a map mismatch. You can also view the routes that you've loaded to your satnav to check they do what you're expecting. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

makes sense I suppose.
One slightly aside question. How do the same maps as in the unit get into basecamp?
Is that part of the setup process?
I already use basecamp for some things, the mapping I have for that is an opensource map that I can also use on my 62S. |

Simplest is that BaseCamp will read the map off your device.
You can also choose, having updated Garmin CN maps to your device, to download them to your PC. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

What are CN maps?
And is the download to PC option shoved in my face or do I need to go looking for it?
The 2599 is out in the delivery van... |

CN = City Navigator which is the map on your nuvi.
the choice is not exactly shoved in your face ... just look for the Installation Options link on the Express page where it allows you to update or reinstall maps. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
