Hi, wonder if I can pick a few brains please for some advice...?

I have a Nuvi 2597LM (which I'm very happy with) and have been looking to see what options there are for adding traffic notifications to it as the options are all there in the menus it just says I need a "traffic receiver accessory"

The Android Smartphone app offers traffic (at a cost and I've also got a low 3g data limit and frankly I didnt like the app....) so its not really an option but I'm a bit confused as to what else is available and the best options so any advice gratefully received...

Also, can you update/add to the "apps" that are on this box??

Normally the 2597 just needs a TA10 or TA20 traffic antenna cable. However, because yours is the LM and not LMT it may not have the inbuilt traffic receiver so getting the cable would be pointless.

If you do want traffic then look at the digital traffic models. I upgraded from a 2597 to a 2599 and I'm very pleased with it.

I don't believe the 2597 has the traffic receiver built in, but you can check by looking under Settings, Device, About. If it does it will say around 4th line down 'Built in traffic receiver: Yes'

If it doesn't then you'll need a cable with a receiver built in. If it were me, and I was going to get a cable, I'd buy the digital one, as the digital traffic is far superior IMO.

The other option is to upgrade as Kremmen suggests.

Given the price of the cable and the price of a newer satnav that option might be preferable.

I'm pretty sure they're interchangeable, and provided they say they're compatible you should be fine.

Afraid I'm not clear what would happen if you added the GTM36 cable, I've seen threads on a US site that says you get both, but that may or may not mean it will work the same way here. I suggest you try calling Garmin and ask them.

That's the prob. I can't find anything that says whether they are ore are not compatible. The nearest I can come is from a Garmin retailer that says the TA20 is compatible with the 2599. But my 2569 came with a TA10. I suppose I could just buy one and return it if it isn't.

I have just cobbles a car charger from a non compatible one by replacing the 2 wire USB lead with a 4 wire one and shorting together the data leads.

The second question was just me idly thinking of things rather than a serious one as the RDS lead is a bit on the jolly expensive side ;=)

Obviously I can't give a 100% answer but my 2597 came with a TA20 and my 2599 with a TA10 and those 2 units seem to be interchangeable. The only difference I can see by looking at them is that the TA20 cable is slightly thicker.

When I got the 2599 I initially ran it with the TA20 as I have it routed behind the dash but when I found the time I swapped them over because the thinner cable is easier to position.

The main thing is that the 5v power requirements seem to be universal so it's just the antenna bit.

Yes, the only external difference that I could see is that the TA10 has a straight mini USB and the TA20 has a right angled one. The straight one lent itself perfectly to the construction of my homemade docking station into which I just push the Garmin onto the USB so don't have to fiddle around with leads or retaining clips etc. Having said that, the method of holding the Garmin to the windscreen mount is a brilliant design.

Agreed but the Garmin website lists it as being compatible with the 2597LM
