Hi, my unit arrived with the memory almost full (6Gb installed, and about 700mb available). I thought this may cause problems when updating later, so I wanted to reduce the loaded maps from all of Europe to just the UK. This would also make future updating and loading quicker. I did not want to install an HD card. I have been asking Garmin, but they are hopeless.

I downloaded Mapinstall and downloaded the whole of Europe to my PC. I picked particular areas and installed them to the Nuvi. However, all the rest of Europe is still loaded. How can I delete the areas I do not want loaded?
Interestingly, if I look at the folder structure in Windows Explorer, I cannot find any files anywhere near large enough to fill the memory by about 6Gb. I'm guessing I am not seeing the main map files. Why?

Also, I did a daft thing and deleted 2 files that were in the 'Map' folder. One had an img extension and was about 250mb in size, and a second that had something like a czx extension and was very small. Checking the unit still seem to be fully functional.

So basically, I would like to know how to delete the files I don't need, where are the main map files, and what were the 2 files in the 'Map' folder?

Thanks for any help.
Nick

Garmin have deliberately hidden the area where the map files are. Not a problem though because so far all my 4 map updates have not needed any extra room as the process replaces.

On my 2597 I used Garmin Express to replace all of Europe with UK and Ireland and contrary to Garmin's statement the voice commands still work. By reducing the map it doesn't need a SD card which the 2015 EU maps do.

If you want to remove some files to create a bit more space then are a few posts of which areas to look at.

You can also delete unwanted text and keyboard files. 700Mb though is ample space for your nuvi to function so I wouldn't worry about messing with map files.

If it gets to the point during a map update when there isn't sufficient space Express will offer the option of a card or a smaller map subset.

Many thanks guys.
Still curious to know what the 270 mb file with an img extension is in the 'Map' folder. I managed to delete this, but after updating using Mapinstall and picking the UK areas only, this file has reappeared of the same size.

Is there no way to see the main map files?
Is there no way of removing the files I don't want? Just thinking they will load more quickly and easier to manage ref updates. In the good old days with my previous nuvi using mapsource you could remove areas.

cheers
Nick

If you've used MapInstall then the file in the Map folder will be the UK map. The reason there is no change when you delete it is that the pre-loaded EU map file is in a hidden folder called .system

When you delete the .img file in the Map folder nothing changes as your nuvi uses the pre-loaded map.

The reason the .system folder is hidden is because deleting files from there can turn your nuvi into a brick if you don't know what you're doing. However if you really want to risk it I can explain how.

Note that MapInstall is not the best way to update your nuvi and I'm curious why you're doing it that way? MapSource with your older nuvi was a good method then but things have moved on. Use MapInstall and you'll lose things like junction view, voice commands etc etc as it simply installs a map.

Thanks for the reply.

Garmin told me to use Mapinstall, as I could pick the areas to update. They did not explain how to delete the areas I'm not using. I emailed them back about that one. I think they were suggesting that picking areas would delete the areas not picked.
The 2 deleted files reappeared in 'Map' and of the same size, so I am guessing I have not lost anything, although I have not tested it yet on the road. What files hold junction views and voice commands? The voice command is still working.
Are you saying Mapsource will not work now?
What is the best way to install a map as you say Mapinstall is not the best way. I have also used Garmin Express, but I can only update the whole of Europe with that.
Wow, I'm finding this Garmin very inflexible.

It's actually very flexible but in the past folks have bricked their nuvis so Garmin have now made it harder to do so. Most people just buy them and use them 'as is'.

Mapsource won't work with newer nuvis unless you set them to mass storage mode, the default is mtp mode.

To allow access to the .system folder (and you do so at your own risk) you must do two things.

First, set mass storage mode:

1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
3. The Developers Screen will pop up
4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.

Second, set Windows to show hidden AND system files.

You will now see the .system folder and the pre-installed map file, gmapprom.img

The problem you now face to do what you want is to force Express to offer you a smaller region. To do so change gmapprom.img to gmapprom.xyz and delete the Map folder and the .img file there. Run Express and since it won't see any map but also will find there isn't enough room for the whole of EU will offer you a smaller map region, allowing you to choose UK.

The junction view file is also in the .system folder in the JCV folder. It will be replaced with a new .jcv file by Express.

WOW!

Many, many thanks for all the information.

1) Presumably, if I back-up any removed files, I can always just copy them back.
2) So presumably, just changing the extension gmapprom.img keeps it on the device, and still I have limited space of about 750mb. So I understand now why Express will offer a choice of area. as the whole of the EU will be too large. Then after the install, I guess I can remove the gmapprom.xyz? Thing is, will 750mb be enough to install the UK only? Can I install the UK only using Mapinstall? I was kind of happy picking the areas on the map? How will Express allow me to instal the UK only?

Cheers, and you are being very helpful, and I appreciate your help.

Should be enough for UK. As I suggested above MapInstall isn't the way to go. Without enough space for the full update Express will offer you specific areas and UK should be one of them.

Once you have UK installed you can delete the unwanted EU map.
