A German driver has used a speed camera to ask his girlfriend to marry him.

31 year old Christian Breier repeatedly drove past a speed camera until he managed to set it off - whilst holding a sign which read "Will you marry me?".

He had to be careful to keep to a certain speed so as not to fall foul of tiered German speeding laws.

He "got away with" a 15 euro fine with no points on his licence as he kept within 10 kph of the speed limit. 25 kph over the limit would have set him back 80 euros and a point on his licence. He succeeded on his 5th attempt.

Far form being put out by a driver speeding (and was he really paying due care and attention?), local authorities, actually enlarged the photo from its normal size to an A4 print before sending it.

When the envelope with the ticket turned up, Mr. Breier's girlfriend Anja opened it and found the photo. She said yes.

How does that compare with the cost of a wife and two and a half children? Laughing

So what would we get as Brits for exceeding German Speed limits?

I must admit that some years ago I was flashed by one of those pinky/red cameras as I slid through a 30kph limit in a local village, but I thankfully received no communication. I often wondered if it was because I was only a slightly over the limit and they couldn't be bothered with the paperwork, or that I was driving a brand new BMW and spending money as a tourist in their country? Or was it that they understood that as there were no pedestrians visible, and that my only infringement was exceeding a theoretical speed and not driving in anyway dangerously, i.e. using their common sense instead of raising money for their government? And before anyone asks I checked my speed on my sat nav. and not my speedometer, so I was afraid that I was above the 30kph limit.

I have changed my car since and been back without any issues.

There has long been an agreement that UK will assist foreigners to nick UK drivers. I presume they decided it wasn't worth the bother plus they simply didn't believe a Beamer could travel at less than 19mph. Rolling Eyes

Trust me Dennis they can and in one area that I drive on a regular basis mine definitely does as the local police are notorious for zero tolerance.

But it really knocks the fuel consumption so it might enhance safety, but it plays havoc with those Co2 thingies.

You must have changed it for a black one - black Beamers own the road (as proved again to me today when one sat there waiting for me to drive round it, rather than it obeying the usual rules and pulling in to give way to me). Very Happy

By the way, they didn't pursue this one, which I ignored, intending to plead that I thought it was a wind up, being signed by Snow White!

Dennis

Mine's dark mineral grey and if you ever see me hogging the road, you have my permission to push me out of the way.

I almost feel like saying as you've shown me yours I'd better show you mime, but I destroyed it. Back in about 1970 my car was photographed by the Swiss police for travelling above their local speed limit on a motorway. Unfortunately for them the side-on camera photographed my wife and not me, so having managed to cross the border back into Austria, I checked with the local police as to what I should do. Their response was somewhat crude and earthy, but roughly translated into "stuff the Swiss, just don't go back until you change your car."

Yes, we would have gone again in 2005, but held back until 2006 for my new 06 registered vehicle.
