I think Garmin have simply followed others. We're all used this days to buying memory cards to expand memory in our phones, cameras etc.

Many users probably don't even bother to update their maps very often. In the early days satnavs weren't even updateable, and even when they started to come with the ability to update maps it was almost cheaper to replace the satnav every couple of years, benefitting from newer hardware at the same time.

I understand some folks have issues updating, but in the main the update process is very smooth. True Express when it was first launched had a few issues and occasionally still struggles with 'non standard' mapsets, and I've also seen occasions on the Garmin forums where the problem was actually a database error on the Garmin side, but mostly Express does what it's meant to do.

I still though prefer to update to a 'cloned' device, then transfer the updated files myself from the clone to my satnav. That way I'm more in control of what's being updated and where it goes. If anyone wants to see how the clone method works see this thread:

If they provided a way for all the maps for a device to be held locally on the PC and then to be quickly transferred to the SatNav for the users upcoming trip. However they appear to be stuck with USB2 speeds for data transfer.

You can indeed do that if you wish. I hold the full EU mapset on my PC but only have the Western Europe part installed on my devices. Basecamp can then be used to add/delete any area as required.

True Garmin use USB2 speeds on the current models, but a transfer of the UK mapset for example only takes 10 minutes or so. Given that USB3 is relatively new it's unsurprising the current crop of satnavs still use USB2, indeed some of the older ones are limited to USB1, but I suspect Garmin will move to USB3 in the near future.

I have never been able to update maps to the SD card using Garmin Express, as Express does not recognise that there is a card (even with enough space) inserted into the Satnav. I get the message that the satnav memory is nearly full and should consider getting a card.
As suggested by sussamb previously I have used the cloning method and it works. Garmin support was no help and frankly the conversation has died out.

HOWEVER
Last time I used the cloning method and reinserted the card into the satnav, forgetting to delete the 'Garmin.xml' file from the card, as instructed, Express did recognise the card and showed the full free memory on the card.
So next time I will try to update via Express direct to the card. Lets see what happens.

How do you guys find the screen for visibilty in the car, particularly in bright sunlight?

Being a glass screen do you get reflections or glare?

I'm looking to buy one myself (or a similar model) and this is one of my concerns, as the screen looks great in the shop, bright, sharp and I like the pinch to zoom, but what's it like to use on the road?

The visibility was fine on mine, unlike the lower models where you can't see the screen if some sunlight hit it.

I've now got a TT 5000 and can definitely say even the top end TT's can't beat the screen quality of the Garmin 3598, but TT I think they do beat the 29xx range for screen

Seems Garmin have just Posted firmware 4.60

Only change it claims is an improved traffic reception in Russia - seems strange that this merits a firmware release.

I wondered that when I saw it. I got 4.6 a few weeks ago now though.

But I'm holding off on the 2015.3 maps as the .2 are only a few weeks old themselves.
