What won't recognise it? Your PC or Basecamp or both?

If your PC isn't recognising your nuvi try the steps here (the ones at the beginning)

http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7Be908ee90-c6c1-11e1-dcef-000000000000%7D

I understand USB3 can cause issues, so if you have a choice use a USB2 port.

Maybe when you reinstalled Express and restarted your PC you effectively did what's suggested in this Garmin FAQ

http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={8a5f1480-ddf1-11e2-7dd9-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

not sure what the differnce is to be honest. but at least its working.. well at least the last time i looked it was!

i cant get on with basecamp it drives me bonkers. I can download maps onto laptop via express, but will I need a version of mapsource on laptop to start with?? but new laptop has no cd drive:( any ideas

MapSource is no longer supported. Basecamp takes a bit of getting used to but once you have it's far more powerful than MapSource. However MapSource is still available as a download (no need for any drive) should you wish, be aware though that you need to jump through a few hoops to get a newer nuvi to work with MapSource

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

As for cables, not all USB cables are the same. Data cables have extra wire(s), and they often fool the Nuvi into thinking it's connected to a computer when it may not be. That's why Garmin recommend using their own cables and state that other USB cables may or may not work.

Thanks!

I have mapsourse on my PC and it works OK, it recognises the new maps when I upgrade them from time to time. just have to remember when downloading to choose both device and PC. Thanks for the link will try it ..then install maps to new laptop only and see how it goes! Smile

I appreciate what you say re basecamp, but not computer literate and have been using mapsourse since 2000'ish

Well it's Mapsource ..... Garmin only does one version.

Whatever .... If it does what you want no need to change.
