I am wanting to get a new sat nav for my car to replace my trusty TTG0630, it's served my well but a larger screen and lifetime map updates sound tempting and the Go500 or Go600 would have been the perfect replacement that is until I read that I can't install my own POI's! So I am now looking at Garmin, I have a Montana but am not familar with any of the car sat navs, I liked the sound of the Garmin nuvi 3597LMT but would like to ask if there are any owners on the forum who could answer some basic questions,
1.can I enter a destination using latitude and longitude coordinates?
2.can I add my own POI's?
3.can I add a POI category, name it and select a icon?
4.can I find an alternative route?
5.can I connect to my PC and add POI's and coordinates?
Any info would be much appreciated.

Yes to all of the above.

Entering lat & long is straightforward, POIs and alternative routes can be added using Garmin Basecamp, but it's not very intuitive. Post here before you bang your head on the desk.... http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=94596

Thanks for the info, on my TT I can navigate to a coordinate I have entered and then add it as a POI all whilst sitting in my car without needing to connect it to my PC can I also do this with the Garmin?

Yes, but note in Garmin speak you save favourites, not POIs.

I would also like to confirm that "Yes" is the answer to all of your questions.

Specific to number four:
the 3597 will, when appropriate, find two alternate routes. That means that it will find three routes in total – when the three routes are close enough to your criteria to be viable. You will then see each route on the map in a different color, and you can make your choice.
Of course, it is always possible to go via a route of your individual making.

I would also add that the 3597 is a beautiful sat-nav.

Because of the confusion in the words: POI / favourites / saved-places, you have managed to mislead yourself.
I believe that you are speaking about what Carmen now calls "saved places." Any and all modern sat-navs will accept user saved places – referred to elsewhere as favourites.
These are, basically, destinations to which you intend to go more than once – and wish to avoid entering them more than that one time.
A POI has another meaning.
