Hi all,

Hoping someone might be able to advise. I am a reasonably new driver and want to invest in a sat nav.

Currently (being a new driver) finding the correct lanes and exits for large roundabouts (I live in London so these are quite intimidating-I'm talking Green Man Interchange, Waterworks Roundabout etc) is a little 'challenging'.

I've heard a lot about lane assist/lane guidance-which system would you recommend to help navigate through these large roundabouts?

Many thanks!

D

But you said that you had just bought a Nuvi Here. Did you sort out the charging? Feedback on advice given would have been nice!

Hi there,

Apologies-as I said, I'm a newbie!

I did buy a Nuvi, but it's going back to the shop, due to the charging issue. So now I'm looking for my next purchase. I don't mind spending some ££ on a sat nav but I felt the Nuvi was overpriced given that the ALG doesn't even work in the UK yet.

So the Nuvi didn't do it for you then and you didn't solve the charging problem?
I have found that iGO based products have ALG that helped me out no end in south London, going from the Beckenham area to Kew several years ago, so I expect it has improved a bit since then.
Give me a route to take where you want lane guidance and I'll simulate it on my device to see what it's like. And you'll have to be a bit more specific than from 'Robin Hood Roundabout' to 'Five man's Interchange' (or similar) as I don't have a clue as to where the last two points that you indicated as troublesome are.

The Green Man Interchange is in Leytonstone, where the A12 connects with the A113, A114 and High Road Leytonstone.

Thanks dales. I'll try a route around that area and see what happens.

Give me a while. Which way are you going around the junction in question?

Here you go. Here's a couple of negotiations of the roundabout.

Right, starting on the A12 going north east where it goes over Grove Green Road with the destination around the roundabout on High Road

Get into LH lane.
On the slip road. 100 yards to roundabout Take either outside lane
Crossing the A12 Either Right Hand lane
Just after crossing A12 Take centre or Left hand lane
Just before the turn off to destination Take either of the two left hand lanes.

Starting on A113 by Selworthy Close going south west onto A12.
No lanes until 320 yards from roundabout then Get into R/H lane past Weavers Almshouses
Bear left onto ..... Still in R/H lane?
Just before roundabout Take outside lane of three
Onto roundabout. Keep in outside lane.
Just before A12 crossing take either outside lane.
Passing High road Either of the centre two lanes then
Either of the two left lanes then turn onto slip road

A cheap Chinese satnav running iGO8. Something like
THIS or THIS or one at similar process from Nozatec. The non truck versions are cheaper I think. Don't worry about the truck name, it does cars etc as well but if you happen to have a large vehicle, you don't have to pay getting on for £300 for a truck Garmin.
It doesn't have traffic capability, but what do you expect for 35 quid?
The lane guidance pops up as blue squares with arrows at the bottom of the screen. So if you have 4 lanes around the roundabout, you have 4 blue squares, in the case of 'your' roundabout, the two left hand lanes are dimmed an crossed out. There is no verbal "get into R/H lane" on this roundabout, but there is on some junctions, such as where the A21 splits off right from the M25, it verbally tells you to get into the right hand lane.

For comparison, do you want someone with a Garmin or TomTom unit to tell you what their system shows or says?

I'd do it myself now, but I'm at work until the small hours

I was rather hoping that would happen.

That would actually be really really helpful if someone could-I'm thinking about a TomTom Start 25 but but not clear on how good the lane guidance will be.

A comparison on a TomTom or Garmin would be super helpful!
