Hi tried the search option and couldn't find anything. I'm off to France in a week and am concerned about the recent law changes regards to speed camera locations and devises which can detect them.

In simple terms I have purchased a Nuvi 2598 LMTD and wondering whether or not the maps for France which have been down loaded are up to date with the information for danger zones rather than the location of speed cameras.

Thanks Rothers

Speed cameras for France were withdrawn from Garmins a year ago and replaced with the legally allowed danger zones. Note though that updating the map doesn't update speed cameras/danger zones.

Thanks for that. I have just been on the Phone with Garmin help line who reliably inform me that having only just bought the 2598 and uploaded the EU maps it will automatically default to the Camera/danger zone in keeping with the French law. Is there any way of checking this. I may run one of my planned route in preview mode to see if it pick anything out.

Again thanks for the info and any other pointer or advice is greatly appreciated.

You could look in the POI folder on your nuvi when you connect it to your PC. I don't have the French zones now but they may have a different file name to the other speed camera files. Or as you suggest, run a planned route in simulation mode.

I'd be amazed though if they don't have the safety zones.

I've driven in France many times, and they're always changing the traffic/speeding laws. I use a 2009 Michelin Atlas of France which shows the location of most of the speed cameras, to clearly isn't 100% accurate any more.

In practice, there's usually a warning about 0.5-1.0Km before a fixed camera on the autoroute.

You can use ViaMichelin's Route Planner to check for "Dangerous stretches of road" and things like 30km/h zones. However there are in reality too many of them to make notes.

Also have a look at Driving in France. There are now hundreds of unmarked police cars with speed cameras on board. They're mostly Renault Méganes or Peugeot 206s with very clean windows!

I expect your satnav will pretty accurate - I had my wallet stolen in Barcelona and had to rely on "no toll roads" to get to our friend's house, and it was fine.

And of course, the glib answer is stick to the speed limits...
