I'm looking to replace my tomtom 940 which started to reboot it's self when ever it feels like and traffic that's the same also you can boil an egg while it does a reroute ,
My problem is that I can get a refurb tomtom 1000 direct from tomtom for £101 or do I buy a brand new tomtom 820 uk from argos for £109.99
Has anyone got either of these and do they suffer with the same problems as I've been experiencing .

Have you tried backing up the units data files to a PC, copying them to a micrp-SD Card and running from that? I found it routed faster and if the internal memory is failing it might fix your issues for the cost of a 4Gb micro SD card.

It's simple, using Windows Explorer (or Mac Finder). Just copy and paste the entire contents of the device into a separate directory/folder on your computer, then copy and paste those contents onto the SDHC micro card (it's not wise to try copying straight from device to card as it may not work properly).

The directory/folder on your computer will then become your PC backup. Then delete everything from the device and it will run from the card.

The Micro SDHC card should be a good speed one - Class 10 is easily available these days and you won't need any bigger capacity than 8GB (Paul said 4GB, but these days it's hard to find one that small!).

Cheers guys I will give it ago I've got a 4gig card doing nothing , will let you know how I get on, if that doesn't improve then it's back to the drawing board of a new unit , might even give a garmin a shot as I don't like the latest tomtoms , someone told me the new garmin traffic is a lot better than tomtom , but I'm not sure

well I found my old memory card which turned out to be 8gig and I moved everything from the unit to a computer folder then onto the card as recommended and I must admit I've had no reboots and the reroute is a lot quicker , I'm still on the fence about the traffic , as I haven't had chance to test the traffic on my usual run .
fingers crossed I will get at least another year out of it,
I'm still tempted to buy the 820 and keep it boxed and unregistered , only for the fact you can add poi's and it has a card slot
then once this dies i will have a replacement.
cheers guys for all your help.

But look how far back you have to go (model wise), to find one. Wink

Just a quick update,
After moving everything to the memory card ,it has cured the reroute speed and the traffic didn't drop out once last night, the problem that has got a lot worse is the unit rebooting itself,
on a 2 hr journey last night it rebooted 3 times and this morning on the same journey 4 times , I can't be done with the fault so I've gone and ordered the 820 live , I decided for the price as it includes the latest free map and the 12months live services then I will have had my money's worth out of it .
I was looking at garmin units but I can't get a comparison of garmin traffic against tomtoms and it also seems they have a similar problem where the screen freezes and turns grey .
