Apple is rumoured to be looking at better integration with car dashboards in the next version of iOS, its smartphone and tablet software.

9to5mac is reporting that Apple is already working with car manufacturers to closely integrate iOS with the vehicle and is further looking at its own solutions for mounting devices in the car.

Apple are allegedly looking at a system that allows data from apps running on the iOS device to be displayed on the vehicle's dashboard display in a similar fashion to that demonstrated by VNC and others.

Whilst the benefits of such integration are clear, getting vehicle manufacturers on-board is the biggest hurdle and consumers would surely prefer a third party system for such connectivity that did not tie them to a single manufacturers devices.

There are more than enough bad drivers on the road as it is, with this in a car how long will it be that Facebook or twitter would be running in the dash or better still YouTube,

My ipad or iPhone I use only as a sat nave in the cars and should stay that way.

But what if that integration allowed you to use the steering wheel controls to set up the navigation app as opposed to having to tap the screen?

Integrating a smartphone into a car isn't just about Facebook, Twitter and watching videos of cats while driving. What about a large speedo sign on your dashboard as you approach a camera in CamerAlert? Or your car seeing that your petrol is getting low, it knows you have 150 mles left of your journey (because it's linked to your navigation app) so it suggests, via your navigation app, that you call in for petrol in 40 miles because another app says that fuel there is 5p/L cheaper there than the other petrol stations on your route.

This is utter Bull***t! All we need motor manufacturers to do is provide a smooth, circular area on the dash so we can mount any suction device without needing to resort to the windscren. I absolutely detest all these "integrated" devices as they never actually do anything as well as a bespoke sat nav, or even a smartphone!

y'know, I seem to remember a satnav which was going to do this - tell me the nearest, or en route cheapest fuel. Wonder whatever became of that?

TomTom tried the same thing but failed.

How many cars have built in TomTom? Was it just Renault?

No not just Renault.
As well as the Carminat for Renault, TT have teamed up with Fiat/Lancia for the 'Blue and Me', and also have built-in units in Lexus, Mazda, Iveco, Daihatsu and Toyota vehicles. Plus they have units that pair with Sony head units.
