The Manchester Evening News has reported that Salford council may introduce mobile speed cameras in speed problem areas such as schools. The paper seems to attribute the decision to council budgets by saying "A cash-strapped town hall could set up mobile speed cameras outside school gates."

As well as introducing mobile cameras across other areas, Salford council are also considering introducing bus lane cameras.

The initiative appears to be to be related to the renewal of a £1m annual parking tickets contract with a private company and its possible extension for one year.

A report, linked to this renewal, states: "During this time, additional functions such as bus lane and other enforcement opportunities using mobile technology can be explored further and included within the procurement exercise."

Funny thing to attribute it to. If it is anything like the school crossing I use regularly, then the biggest problem is cars ignoring the red light and going through regardless. This happens far too often. Anything that makes drivers think a bit more when kids are around is a good idea.

In my experience the main problems near school entrances are badly and dangerously parked cars, usually abandoned by lazy parents dropping-off/collecting their offspring.

You can read this slightly differently. Either: "The council is using the mobiles to boost income" or "Despite being cash strapped, the council are deploying a cam for road safety reasons at school gates."

It so happens that I'm with jonbaker and wonder how much revenue that they will raise, unless of course it's a 20MPH zone and there is off road parking for the school run.

The report says "The move to look at new ways of fining drivers..." which I read as "The move to look at new ways of taxing drivers..."

And what are the chances that these cameras will operate even at times when the schools are closed?!

If it was a tax for drivers everyone would have to pay it for driving on the road.

They're looking at fining a specific group of drivers who don't do what the council want them to do in that area...

In my experience they also need to install CCTV to cover the school gate chevrons and fine the drivers who flout that as well.
