Hello, hopefully, someone can clear up a little mystery for me.

I am considering four different OBD2 apps for my iPhone 4.

One that I am interested in, sell their own Wi-Fi scanner on e.bay.com but they will not ship to UK. Another also sell their own scanner, but have no stock currently.

Does anyone know if I need to use a proprietary scanner with a particular app, or can I just buy a generic Chinese one?

Am I right in thinking that once the phone is connected to the car, any of the OBD app will work with it? I don't want to buy any old unit only to find that it is incompatible with my apps.

For use with the iPhone product range it used to be the case that you needed to use a WiFi OBD-II reader BUT Lemur brought out a product called "BlueDriver" which works with the iPhone 4 very well indeed.

When released it cost about £25 for the hardware but more recently it seems to have increased in price (still way cheaper than the OBD-II WiFi units) see Here to read what I thought about it - I still use it on mates cars as well as my own when need be.

I think you will find the device you choose will only work with software that offers specific hardware support so don't expect a cheap unit from China to work with all the different apps - Mike

Thanks for that Mike. I have ordered a £23.cn unit, so I'll see what it does.
If its no good, then the Lemur unit looks quite good.

I tried to buy one for iOBD2 by Xtool, but they won't ship to UK Sad
