I recently submitted several Recycling Centres around Edinburgh. They are all called recycling centres, but you guys changed them to Civic Amenity Sites. I believe with the emphysis these days on recycling these places are all now called recycling centres. What you guys call recycling centres are actually recycling points - ie a few bins for various different things in your Tesco car park is a recycling point, not a recycling centre.

Will you be changing the naming of these?

Why bother? Most people know where their local recycling centre/point is. and I for one, am not going further than I have to and use my petrol and generate all that nastr CO2, to do my bit for a very dubious green brigade

I don't know, have mixed views on this.
I have submitted several of my own, but they were full on recycling centers for oil, tyres, plastics etc.
Many of the supermarkets have limited stuff for paper, cans etc, but some of them here in London have stopped paper because it is to bulky.

If you are on hols, in a campervan, caravan etc then uou may well want to drop stuff off there, including cooking oil etc.

I know you can ask, but you can also ask where the McDonalds is (why anyone would beats me), or the nearest petrol station etc.

Like I say, open minded.

First the off-topic bit:

FREE WIFI!

Second the on-topic bit:
A recycling centre is a recycling centre in my eyes - whether they only take paper and bottles or go the whole hog with oil, batteries and fridges.

In the Independent Garages section do we state whether they do MOT's or just repairs? Or if they do tyres too?

A Civic Amenity Site is a Council run process that handles Recycled and Non-recycled Waste and is staffed. It also covers a much larger range of Recycling, such as Green Waste, Batteries, Electrical Appliances, etc.

A Recycling Centre will, generally, only accept a limited type of Waste and is not usually Council run. Usually Glass, Textiles and Paper is handled.

Ah, so a "Civic Amenity Site" is what I would call a "Household Waste Site" or "Household Waste Recycling Centre" as Bradford MDC now seem to call them

So that explains why I could never find any household waste sites in POI databases as southerners call them by a different name!

Civic Amenity Site sounds so general that it's meaningless.

This is Local Government speak. As you say, meaningless gobeldegook.
Re. Daggers post. Our local council puts the word TIP in brackets whenever they refer to whatever they call our local tip in council speak, to ensure that everyone knows what they are talking about. Ye Gods and little fishes, why the heck they don't just call it the tip in the first place totally escapes me and pretty much everyone knows that you can recycle as much stuff as you want to there. Hang on a mo, no you can't, they limit you to a cetrain number of bags of stuff per every so often. Why? Beats me!

a·men·i·ty (-mn-t, -mn-)
n. pl. a·men·i·ties
1. The quality of being pleasant or attractive; agreeableness.
2. Something that contributes to physical or material comfort.
3. A feature that increases attractiveness or value, especially of a piece of real estate or a geographic location.
4. amenities Social courtesies.

How exactly does this fit in with "The tip?"

From Wickipedia:

Quote:
A civic amenity site (CA site) or household waste recycling centre (HWRC) is a facility where the public can dispose of household waste and also often containing recycling points. Civic amenity sites are run by the local authority in a given area. Collection points for recyclable waste such as green waste, metals, glass and other waste types are available. Items that cannot be collected by local waste collection schemes such as bulky waste are also provided.

In the United Kingdom, civic amenity sites are informally called "tips" or "dumps."

I was not disputing the name that council speak gobbledygook gives them, but the inaccurate misuse of the word 'amenity' to dress up something that's a tip or dump into something where people would want to go to improve their 'quality of being pleasant or attractive; agreeableness' and gives absolutely no clues as to its actual purpose of being a public recycling facility.

I think, in light of the direction of this thread, that we should change the name to Household Waste Recycling Centre. Any other Idea

Should we change Recycling Centre to something like Bottle Bank, or Local Recycling Point?

If we can come to some agreement, then I don't see a problem.
