pocketgpsworld.com
TomTom announced today that their local search service, TomTom Places, will be made available on its PNDs, Apple iPhone and smartphone running Android.

TomTom Places combines an enhanced POI database with business listings. Businesses will be able to enhance their own listing information and access conversion rate data.

The free add-ons will be available as standard on new LIVE enabled PNDs and will be available as a free upgrade for existing connected devices and iPhone's this summer. The Android application, which will function as a search engine and not a turn by turn navigation application, will be available later this year.

To use TomTom Places now visit www.places.tomtom.com.

This is another classic piece of marketing blurb from TomTom that is all 'puff' and no hard facts.

I already HAVE Google local search on my TomTom PND's (which works well), so is this REPLACING the Google service?

As a quick test I searched for "Fish and Chips" near my home:

Google local serach on my Go940 found 30 results within 4 miles
The TomTom Local Search website found NONE.

I assumed it might not be working at all in the UK, but it did find a single result near a village in Oxford with a similar name to my London district, so it is working.

Good to see that they have not been wasting effort on old technology like mapshare or itinerary planning for nav3 devices Laughing

But if you go to the actual TomTom places site you will see that it's not a UK thing, only Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands etc at the moment. One assumes that Google Places is somewhat lacking in these areas? Or simply unavailable to those devices?

I should also add that this was not from a UK press release - hence why there's little to no UK coverage :D

Perhaps TT ought to spend more time ensuring that their mapping is more accurate & up to date and that their devices are more up to date as well before disappearing off on a completely different tangent, wasting time & effort like this. Rolling Eyes

My TT is sitting in a draw, unloved & unused, gathering dust.

A complete & utter waste of money. Sad

Worked perfectly for me - and found the results I was expecting, which is good

Then even tried Fish and Chips and my town (just to copy Andy_P) and it brought up all the results it should (and I should know Laughing Out Loud!!!)

So don't know if they have just "switched on" UK or something was amiss when you tried, but quick, effective, comprehensive

Now, where is the update?!!!

I think you were lucky. Apparently there is only one fish & chip shop in Solihull - that's an awful lot less than I know! ... and when I try "fish and chips" (instead of &), I get the rather strange message
Quote:
"Your search "fish and chips solihull" gave no resuls.

Did you fish and chip in Solihull?"

Do you still think it's so wonderful?

Depends how you enter it. 'fish and chip shop' got one result, 'fish & chip shop' got eight results - all in Chesterfield.

My guess would be that whizzy bits sell more satnavs and inaccurate maps do not reduce sales. After all, they are in the business of selling satnavs Very Happy So is it realy a waste of time and effort on their part?

And as the saying goes "Fools & their money are soon parted.", This is like the daft EcoRoute HD thing that Garmin have chucked out.

Not much use to all but an anal minority.

Why not use your Iphone or smartphone instead? And do: www.yell.com, free & easy.

How about because I haven't got a smartphone or iPhone?

And as I want to "Navigate to..." the places I search for, then surely doing the search on the device that is going to do the navigating makes a lot more sense than having to manually transfer the details across from the phone to the sat nav?

Also, the "daft" Garmin EcoRoute device you hate so much would have been very handy to fault-find an intermittent problem with my car... far cheaper and easier than asking a garage to check it.
