Have been using a Navman for a few years now and, quite frankly, its DennisN On more than one occassion it has almost been launched out the car window at 50 mph.
So, I'm on the look out for a replacement. Must be waterproof so I can use it on my Harley and have an ear plug socket to connect to my Autocom. Would also like MP3 player too but this isnt so important .
Price range is around £300ish
What do ya suggest? |

As far as I know there are only 3 GPS devices intended for a motorcycle.
1. The Zumo 550 - well respected but coming to the end of its life
2. The Zumo 660 - latest version, less features but based on Nuvi firmware
3. The TomTom Rider II. Not as well received as the Zumo range and can only talk to the rider via bluetooth.
None of them cost £300 unless you can find a second hand one.

I would pick any unit that you like and use a Givi S850 satnav holder for your bike. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 765T

Yes, except for the objections that others have raised about it. Also, removing it from the bike each time you stop takes time.
To me (and this is just my personal opinion), the bag is a compromise - and I don't like compromises. I'd rather got for purpose built, which means one of the three mentioned.

| My Tomtom Rider V2 gets my vote with all the extra software you add to it. So you can track your trips etc like the Garmin. |

| You might want to have a look at This its for the bike, I have never used one of these so have no idea on how good they are - Mike |

I used a poly bag over my Navman for long enough so The bag will do me. Got a Givi bag from M&S Motorcycles in Newcastle for £35. A bargain considering they are £41 on Ebay.
Now I will get a unit I like at a decent price. |

So I'm looking for a unit with bluetooth, MP3 player and jack plug socket. Would also prefer wide screen. It shouldnt be HDD as it will be used on a motorcycle as well as in car although there is no need for the unit to be waterproof.....thats sorted!
I guess I am looking for a Garmin or TomTom.
I've posted this in the Beginners Lounge for wider exposure.

So you now need to look through all the posts on the garmin and tomtom pages and decide whether you want accurate maps (garmin), more info on the screen at any one time (tomtom), features (both) or bugs (both).
I would say you are now looking between the Garmin Nuvi 765T and the TomTom 730 - both under £300 - neither waterproof.

I've no experience of using a Garmin unit but do have a TomTom 720 that I use on my motorbike. Some thoughts:
The bluetooth is AD2P (stereo), so doesn't work with all bluetooth headsets. My Cardo does not work with it. I had to buy a bluetooth adapter and plug this into the headphone socket. Not sure what the Garmin supports.
The headphone socket became detached from the circuit board. The continual use of the BT adapter and mild stresses on it whilst in my tank bag, broke it. Don't know if the Garmin would be better made. It also would not fit in the Givi if you have to use an adapter.
I now use the FM output with the Cardo. Not bad, but the usual 'fuzzy' FM reception, certainly not ideal, and I can't answer the phone. Also the recent change to disable spoken navigation commands using FM on the latest firmware means I cannot upgrade.

You can now, I think. Set music player to FM and play a silent track on a loop and the nav instructions and POI warnings will interrupt the silence.
See THIS thread and tell Andy_P "Thank you". _________________ Dennis

I use a Zumo 550, integrates perfectly with phone and Autocom, you can load in speedcam poi's via POIloader (supplied) and is a solid construction with rubberized grips. 660 has a bigger screen and a few more features but isn't as solid and costs more.
TomTom has a nice user inteface but again not as rugged and some people have had problems with the electrical connection between the unit and holder. The bluetooth module to link to the Autocom is not very reliable and is prone to losing the signal. _________________ Aprilia Tuono, Zumo 550

Thanks for the heads-up. I play music anyway, so this is ideal for me. Still, had to download it manually as it's not available for my 720 through home. |

| There is an alternative motorcycle gps now available in the U.K, called the Kapten Rider. It's been available in France for a year but has just been launched in the U.K. It is pocket sized (no need to attach to your motorbike), screenless, all commands are voice driven and combines GPS,FM radio, MP3 player and Bluetooth for a mobile. They are available now and cost £199 |
