Hi, Can someone explain the different type's of Reset. I have read many topics and get quite lost with the refrence to hot reset, hard reset etc. The only one I have had to perform is the one from TT, take out the sd card turn the unit off and press the reset button for fifteen seconds, but reading your topics there are several other kinds. Do different resets cure different problems?

There is only one Reset as far as the TomToms are concerned, and you don't need to take the SD Card out to do it.

The differing resets occur in how you go about doing them. The later models (I can't recall which though), use the on/off button held in, while the older units had the pin in the hole method.

There is effectively only one reset commonly discussed on a TomTom PND, a soft reset using the reset button or power switch (on later models). This is a soft reset as it does not delete data.

The other reset is the return to factory settings option which does delete data.

I think a lot of the confusion may have arisen from the suggestion that you hold the reset button pressed for several seconds, the idea being to ensure the processor has time to complete the reset.

Over several retellings this has turned into the belief that a long press does something specifically different to a short press by design. It doesn't.

Are you sure about that? On the 940 pressing the button for a short time turns it off and when it turns back on again it displays the start up picture. When the button is held down for longer it shuts down then displays the TT logo and the drum roll then you get the loading bar at the bottom of the screen.

Andy's referring to the 'reset button'. There was a mistaken belief that different length presses returned different results.

The x40 and later TomTom's use the power button as you point out. For these a momentary press is ON/OFF and a 20sec press triggers a soft reset.

Thanks for the clarification, Darren, that's what I meant.

When I hold down the reset button for a apx 10-15 sec it reboots with the TT drumroll then loading bar along the bottom.

If I hold it in a further 3-5 sec after this has started, it shuts the device down and restarts it with a BIOS/DOS type screen first, followed by the progress bar along the bottom. This usually results in all my settings being restored to factory. The first book doesn't loose my settings.

When I contacted support, they specifically instructed me to perform these two types of boots.

Aren't either of these boots any different? Confused

As we say above we were talking about the recessed reset button on all older TomToms.
As you say, recent models that use the "power" button seem to do something different, possibly involving a "Return to Factory Settings" as well.
However there is no mention of it on the TT support pages
