Renaming .vpm Files...How?

I have a Garmin nuvi 205W. I want to create my own voices. I used the Garmin Voice Utility to split the .vpm into .wavs. When I try to play the wavs, they are very short and completely silent.

Questions:

Why are they silent?

How can I know what to say/record when the original wav is silent?

What software do you recommend to record the .wavs?

What settings do the .wavs have to be recorded?
I use Sony Sound Forge. I'm assuming that no matter how you record the .wav, it's converted when rejoined using Garmin Voice Utility.

Are their any naming conventions I should be aware of?

I figured out how to make the files and load them, etc. However, how do you change the name of the .vpm file? For example, I used the American English.vpm file and renamed it to test.vpm and then modified it and sent it back my unit. However, instead of test showing up under the voice choices, it now shows two American English entries.

The name displayed in the nuvi is contained within the file somewhere - no way to change it exists at present AFAIK.

Just rename the original VPM file extension (put an '_old' as a suffix) and this will stop it being seen by the nuvi when it starts up. You should then get your new voice file. It will still be called by it's original name.
