What do people think of the the new map consolidation service offered by Satmap?
For £15 they'll put all (or at least as many as will fit on an SD card of as-yet unspecified size) of your maps onto a single mapcard. This appeals to me as the owner of full UK 1:50 000 mapping plus three 1:25 000 maps, but I'm put off by the fact that any future purchases (and I'm likely to want other 1:25 000 maps in the future) will presumably require another return to satmap headquarters of my mapcard and another £15.
I know they need to protect the integrity of the licences, but I'm starting to think that not allowing legitimate paying customers to copy their own maps to their own cards is a serious shortcoming of the Active 10 system; it's certainly inconvenient and time-consuming to have to send your mapcards back to the manufacturer every time.

I think it is a great idea and is something I asked SatMap about quite some time ago, at least they are a company that will listen to what customers want and you have the option to use the service or not.

The small inconvenience of sending your cards back for this to be performed is minor if you want multiple maps on a single memory card. I will be getting my maps consolidated this way once we get into the winter months, although from what others who have used this service have told me the turn around time is very quick - Mike

I had my 1:50k map of Norfolk put on the same card as a custom 1:25k map of part on norfolk when I bought it. They did not charge me.

However there are two small downsides:

Firstly, they wiped the 50k card. Not a problem in my case as I now have Full GB and the Norfolk card only cost me £27. If that had been a more expensive map, it might have been worth selling on ebay.

Secondly, where different scale maps cover the same area, you cannot YET choose which one you use. They just zoom from one to tother like the national park maps. I have been told that a later software release will allow switching.

Mike...just wondering. I have 5 maps put on to one card for me by Satmap. I've just purchased two more off Ebay...I haven't tried it, but, if I try to copy them over to my existing 'encrypted'(?) card, any chance they would copy over successfully ? I would then have all 7 maps on one card.

If you copy an additional map to your already consolidated card that map won't work on the device, the maps are locked to the cards ID, this is unique to each SD card (the S in SD stands for Secure), to get your extra maps on the card it would have to go back to SatMap for inclusion - Mike
