GPS for visitors to South Africa

In the UK I failed to locate any supplier of software or GPS packages with South African mapping.?????????????????????????

However Avis, the car rental people are now offering a service to rent a Garmin GPS system together with your Avis rental car.

I picked up a system at Cape Town Airport which consisted of a Garmin unit ( ? model) complete with SA maps on a card, windscreen fixing, power cable and pouch. Cost of about £5 per day.

Worked OK but with faults found also with Garmin UK systems of:-
1) Voice message about 150 yds before turn ( you have to look at the distance measurement on the display to avoid making a wrong turn)
2)Slow re-routing when making a wrong turn and attempt to get you back to the oringinal route rather a NEW faster one.
3) Inaccurate position ( e.g. tracks on a parallel road whilst giving the same instructions, as for the intended one!!!!!)

The system was of great help, however, much better than having to rely on paper maps in the complex Cape Town road system.

Let us hope that more mapping becomes available and a TomTom or Route 66 package with better verbal instructions.

I haven't tried it but HandyMap have a PocketPC package for SA.
