Hi,

I've just bought a new iPAQ H5550 (BueTooth) and I have been advised to buy the TomTom BlueTooth Navigator 2 GPS system. However, while you get 1 roadmap with TomTom GPS I can find no references to aviation maps and GPS. Can anyone advise which GPS system I should buy to provide both road and avation GPS.

your hopefully!
P

You won't get any sort of aviation style maps with TomTom Navigator 2, it's purely a road navigation product. There are other products you can purchase like WinPilot etc.

We've reviewed several aviation products so far and these are available at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/menu_aviation.php

Hi Dave,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

I've reviewed the article on WinPilot and the pacakage seems excellent. I was wondering though, as I have a BlueTooth enabled Pocket PC, are there any BlueTooth GPS systems out there that also provide aviation navigation. It seems a shame to have the BlueTooth technology and to have to use cumbersome cables.

cheers
Paul

I believe most of them will utilise Bluetooth Receivers. Bluetooth as you're probably aware only receives on a specific com port, usually around COM 8, so providing the software can see the COM port, then there shouldn't be any problems. Best thing is to PM PeterB as he should be able to shed some more light on the subject as he now has an Emtac he's been using, although I'm not sure if it's in cockpit.

Superninja,

If your main flying is UK then actual CAA maps are available from Memory Map with easy plotting and tracking. The same system can use downloaded Aeroplanner maps for world wide coverage.
All the systems seem to be compatible wit BT GPS receivers although there are still some arguments as to their use in the cockpit due to potential electrical interference. For most small plane flying I don't think there is much risk.
Most antenna will do the trick provided you can achieve the combination of good PDA visibility and good antenna exposure for a continuous signal.
