Quote:
A Bulgarian customs officer who stole a gadget-packed phone was caught when its owner, the US Ambassador, activated the GPS program.

Ambassador John Beyrle activated the phone's GPS - Global Positioning System - to locate it in the officer's pocket. He was travelling from Varna to Hungary when his mobile phone went missing while his hand luggage was being x-rayed.

Airport staff searched for the device, but all the customs officers claimed that they hadn't found a phone. But the high-tech device was equipped with GPS and the Ambassador just had to open his lap-top for him to see the exact position of his phone within the customs officer's pocket.

The man and his accomplice have now been arrested, and both face the sack as well as malpractice and theft charges.

Editor's Note
As always with such stories its difficult to seperate the truth from myth!

Why was a US Ambassador passing through customs in the first place?
How did a GPS enabled phone manage to get a signal whilst not only inside his pocket but also presumably inside the airport building?
How did the laptop access the GPS data from the phone?
How could the signal be so accurate that they were able to identify the culprit purely from the GPS position?

It's more likely that they assumed the phone's rough location and then just rang it, the ringing noise emanating from the culprit's pocket would have been all the evidence they needed!

Sounds like last-night's episode of Spooks, where Fiona was wearing a "gps tracker" the size of a 5p coin, which managed to work with no antenna, no power source (unless it was a really tiny battery) and still had transmitting capabilities of at least one update per second by the looks of it.
It then was able to work inside Thames House, in the boot of a car and in a warehouse or something.

But then, the reality wouldn't make good TV 8)

Haha, as a newbie here, does this happen a lot? I posted the story about the Gizmondo theft yesterday, so is this common?

it does sound kind of James Bond. I would love to catch a thief red handed this way.
