iPad mini WiFi lacks GPS
Article by: Darren Griffin Date: 25 Oct 2012
Apple's new iPad mini is perfectly sized to make it the ideal in-car navigation solution. But if you're planning on buying one for its GPS capabilities you'll need to splash out on the Wi-Fi+cellular variant as there is no GPS in the Wi-Fi only model.
In common with other iOS models, Apple only equip those devices that have a cellular radio with GPS, primarily because the system on a chip design they use has the GPS receiver on the same chipset as the cellular radio.
It's a blow for buyers as the Wi-Fi only variant is considerably cheaper. 7" tablets from Google and Samsung all have GPS (they don't have cellular equipped versions).
