A US government safety watchdog has said that more speed cameras are needed to reduce road fatalities.

US traffic deaths increased by 7 percent to 35,092 in 2015, and look to increase again in 2016, but speeding related crash deaths are reportedly down from over 13,000 in 2006 to 9,557 in 2015.

However, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) argues that speeding is underestimated in relation to road deaths. It claims that law enforcement under-reports speeding as the cause of death

An NTSB report says: "The current level of emphasis on speeding as a national traffic safety issue is lower than warranted."

The watchdog recommended action from fifteen states that prohibit automated speed enforcement or automated speed enforcement restrictions and 28 states that do not have automated speed enforcement laws.
