In a follow up to Tuesday's hands off the wheel story, another incident emphasises that speed cameras are not just for catches speeders.

This time, John Naisbitt, from Hetton-le-Hole near Sunderland, was caught speeding at 70mph in a 60mph speed zone by a mobile camera on the A59 in North Yorkshire - he was also seen by the camera footage to allowa child to kneel or stand, unrestrained by a seat belt on the front passenger seat.

Naisbitt, who already had nine points on his licence for speeding, was banned from driving for 6 months and charged £150 in fines and costs.

The area's Mobile Safety Camera Manager, Dave Brown, commented: "The mobile safety cameras are capable of far more than detecting speeding offences and this case should send a clear message that we can and do use them to help detect and deter such dangerous acts. Mr Naisbitt should consider himself lucky not to be facing more serious charges. His disregard for the safety of his young passenger could have ended in tragedy."
