SatNav Redirects Prompts Man To Erect Fake Speed Camera

A father of 7 has erected a fake speed camera on the A303 in the village of Shrewton, Wiltshire.

He claims that sat-navs are redirecting speeding traffic past his house following a road closure connected to a redesign of the nearby Stonehenge visitors centre.

50-year-old Chris Fawcett became tired of drivers using his 30mph village road as a shortcut, so he built a wooden dummy camera last year, but it was mysteriously burned down.

Undeterred, Fawcett has now built a more solid structure out of metal, painted it yellow and installed a vehicle dashboard camera that records up to 24 hours of footage - it cannot monitor speed. Not only is it quite realistic, but has been designed with a mirror that reflects in motorists' eyes as they drive past.

Assuming there is no camera warning sign, quite how much safer the road is with motorists suddenly braking and been flashed by a mirror is debatable.

Wiltshire Council has ask him to take it down as it was on public land and threatened him with legal action. Fawcett has now moved the camera to a tree in his neighbour's garden.

Wiltshire Police are urging villagers to start a Community Speed Watch, where members of the community join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices. Those exceeding the speed limit are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers, but with no ensuing prosecuting.

Fawcett, who claims that local police have backed him by saying he wasn't committing a crime, commented: "These little village roads now are terrible for speeding. And the volume of traffic nowadays, it is horrendous. It is a service for the village and I believe it is step up to something being done about this village. If someone is doing good surely it should be praised not put down?"

What rubbish! If that guy seriously thinks satnavs are redirecting traffic through Shrewton because the visitors centre road has been closed, he wants his head examining. I use the route through Shrewton as an alternative to the A303/A36 to/from Knook - it's quieter, albeit slower. My satnavs always complain and want me to go back to A303/A36.

Irrespective of how the traffic is being diverted through the village, speeding is speeding and has no respect for a person's life! Good for Mr Fawcett in trying to keep the speed down
