Most fixed speed cameras have been called illegal in Belgium by its official Privacy Commission.

The Commission says that the great majority of what is referred to as "stationary police radar cameras" are illegal as they are in violation of their privacy laws.

It is a requirement that the cameras are registered with the Privacy Commission. The devices' photographic data of number plates, and the associated names and addresses of drivers, come under the country's privacy laws.

A spokesman for the Belgian Commission for the Protection of Privacy said, "Every time this data is used should be communicated. The police should not be allowed to circumvent this rule."

It will be interesting to see if convicted speedsters challenge their prosecutions as a result of this information.

The same law does not apply to Belgian mobile speed cameras.
