Eight new speed cameras have ticketed over 23,000 speeders since being switched on last August.

As part of an initial 21 month evaluation, 23,334 drivers were caught breaking the speed limit over the first 12 month period, that's an average of 64 per day.

The Police Crime Commissioner for the area commented: "Speed is one of the biggest causes of deaths on the road and one of the biggest issues that local people raise with me on a daily basis. Birmingham and Solihull installed the cameras and the police supported them by processing and enforcing the fines."

He added: "After years of seeing road deaths and injuries falling we are now seeing them rising. I think we need much stronger efforts from government on road safety. We also need the courts backing us up and doing what ordinary people want, which is tough measures taken against people who are caught speeding."
