The new average speed cameras are now up and running on north-east Scotland's busiest road.

The cameras are operating on a 51.5 mile stretch between Stonehaven and Dundee on the A90. There has been six fatalities on that stretch since 2014.

Transport Scotland said that evidence "has shown the significant road safety benefits following the installation of average speed cameras" and Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf commented: "I am aware that more than 3 in every 5 vehicles between Stonehaven and Dundee are speeding with 1 in 5 exceeding it by over 10mph."

It's thought that many motorists still do not understand how average speed cameras work (especially foreign drivers).

Simply put, pairs of cameras monitor a stretch of road. The first of the pair spot your number plate and start a timer. The second camera spots your number plate again when you complete that stretch and makes a calculation. It measures your average speed over the stretch and then compares it to the allowed speed.
