India has successfully launched the first of seven navigation satellites that will provide a regional navigation service.

IRNSS-1A launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikotaat atop the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C22 off at 11.41pm Monday night.

After a 20 minute journey into space, IRNSS-1A, weighing 1425kg, was injected into its intended elliptical orbit and the solar panels were successfully deployed. ISRO's Master Control facility has now taken full control of the satellite.

A number of manoeuvres will take place in the next few days to adjust the satellite's position and place it into a geosynchronous orbit.
