GPS Catches Teenage Thugs Following Robbery

In the latest success story for GPS technology, three teenage boys were arrested for violently robbing a man at knife-point after a tracking device led police to their whereabouts.

The arrest occurred less than an hour after the incident which saw the teenage trio viciously mug a fellow bus passenger in Birmingham.

The 24 year old victim, who refused to hand over his iPhone to the criminals, was badly assaulted as the trio bent back his fingers and stabbed him in the hand before making off with his phone.

However, the decision proved to be their undoing as information provided by a GPS tracker installed on the stolen device led police directly to their whereabouts.

The tracker taps into the phone's built-in GPS system to provide real-time information pertaining to the phone's location and can be activated remotely by those who have installed it.

The three boys in question, whose ages ranged from 15 to 17 years, were each sentenced to detention within young offenders' institutes or imprisonment for between 18 and 32 months.

This is not the only time when such technology has been suggested as a way to address UK crime figures, with proposals previously made to monitor dangerous offenders using GPS.

GPS directions provided to satnav devices have also led to other successes for criminal prosecution, including a £1 million drug plot foiled by misguided navigation.

I think it was on the one BBC show last night 6th Sept, the BBC financial advisor had his phone snatched by a hooded individual, a witness gave a description and the police took the advisor around the district, asked by the police about the phone model, they then tracked down the culprits in minutes, case solved

Fail for this tech savvy journo, for not knowing that
Using a high value tech item in public, is like a magnet to low lives.

Don't thieves know that they can buy a gps jammer for a few pounds on ebay?

Best keep the goods out of temptations way.

Ohh I agree. Never bring out your phone when on a bus or walking if you are within eyeshot of anyone.

And if it rings, then just talk loudly and don't answer in case you tempt someone to want to steal it off you. Rolling Eyes
