A driver was caught by doing 132mph on a 60mph section of Scotland's A9 near Carrbridge at Lynphail by a police patrol with a mobile speed camera.

Coincidentally, today is the day the controversial A9 average speed cameras are switched on.

Sawmill worker Neil Warner, 44 admitted driving his Subaru Impreza dangerously and was fined £2,500 and banned from driving for three years. He was also ordered to take an extended driving test before resuming driving.

Warner's lawyer argued: "This was a very powerful car he had had for only six months and he drove it at high speed for a short distance on a straight stretch of road in benign conditions."

But Sheriff David Sutherland responded: "Despite the road conditions, this is a case of grossly excessive speed and I had been considering a period of imprisonment."

Sutherland added that because Warner had only one previous speeding conviction, he would not send him to jail.
