Over a quarter of a million pounds that has been raised by average speed cameras on the M5 will been set aside to pay for local road safety projects.
The cameras, which cover the roadworks on the motorway in Gloucestershire, have generated approximately £270,000.
Gloucestershire police and crime commissioner says that the money will go into a 'problem solving hub' which will finance road safety projects from towns, parishes and other groups. Approximately 50 town and parish councils have already expressed an interest.
He commented: "I get more correspondence around road safety than anything else and it regularly cropped up when I talked to people during the election campaign. Safe and social driving remains one of my priorities. The money is a windfall I can use to invest in systems and partnerships that will enable us to tackle issues like speeding and hopefully come up with some new ideas to make our roads safer."
Rough translation:
"We are going to use the money to buy more speed cameras, and as Average Speed ones are so lucrative, we'll be getting those and put them in silly places to trap the unwary".

So that's about £5,000 each. They may find it difficult to get any change after spending meeting money out of that (especially if they pay for an MP to attend the meetings!).
